Mountain Bike Australia members vote ‘yes’ to AusCycling
Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the AusCycling proposal to amalgamate Australia’s cycling disciplines.
Voting at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on the Gold Coast this past weekend some 89% of members indicated their support for the proposal. That result makes MTB the first discipline and national sporting organisation (NSO) to formally endorse the project.
“MTBA remains committed to AusCycling and is confident that AusCycling will be formed with formal voting by Cycling NSW, BMX NT and Cycling Tasmania yet to be conducted,” said MTBA CEO Shane Coppin. “Cycling Australia and BMX Australia will conduct their General Meetings to vote on AusCycling in mid-December.
“MTBA looks forward to working with those organisations who are also supportive of AusCycling, to introduce the proposed model and deliver improved benefits for all riders and members.”
While MTBA has officially endorsed AusCycling, other disciplines haven’t been as supportive. At the time of writing, both BMX Australia and Cycling Australia look unlikely to get the necessary 75% support from their constituent state and territory bodies to adopt the proposal at a national level. For each organisation, three states have indicated they will vote ‘no’ at upcoming general meetings — enough to scupper that organisation’s wholesale support. Both NSOs will put the proposal to a vote before the end of the year.
As things currently stand, it’s unclear exactly what AusCycling will look like should it only go ahead with one (or even two) NSO’s support. It’s perhaps most likely that AusCycling will be formed from MTBA, plus the road/track and BMX states and clubs that voted in favour of the proposal.
