Lawyers of Miguel Ángel López issue statement denying he's under investigation
It’s been a complicated 24 hours for Miguel Ángel López, whose return to Europe from Colombia was welcomed by allegations of drug trafficking.
Now, a few hours after Astana-Qazaqstan announced their rider’s temporary suspension “until all the circumstances of the case are clarified”, the athlete’s own lawyers, Javier de las Heras and Alfredo Gómez, have released a statement, obtained by Eurosport Spain, denying that their client is under investigation, refuting all reports of an arrest; López was met by police at the airport on his arrival in Madrid, but only to search his luggage at a routine checkpoint, finding nothing suspicious.
“[López] soundingly denies having a relationship/participation in any criminal act related to the distribution of unauthorized medicines or any other product referred to in the news published yesterday,” the lawyers’ statement said. “From the point of view of sports ethics he has always been respectful of the rules that regulate it as evidenced by his professional career”.
While López himself may not be under investigation, his name is listed in the case against Marcos Maynar, a professor specialising in sports science and physiology, who is accused of administering doping substances to professional athletes.
The story is still unfolding…
