Julian Alaphilippe out of Milan-Sanremo due to bronchitis
Julian Alaphilippe will not line up at Milan-Sanremo on Saturday. According to a tweet from his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team, the world champion will miss the Monument due to a case of bronchitis.
Alaphilippe’s teammate and one of the team’s top sprinters Fabio Jakobsen will make his Milan-Sanremo debut this weekend. The Dutchman has already rounded up eight victories in 2022, the most notable being Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne in February and the most recent being a stage at Paris-Nice.

Alaphilippe animated the Poggio in the last edition of Milan-Sanremo and ultimately finished in 16th as part of the chasing group behind the 2022 winner Jasper Stuyven. In 2019 Alaphilippe won in Sanremo when he outsprinted Oliver Naesen, Michał Kwiatkowski, and a group of seven other favourites.
“Milano-Sanremo is an event we love and which we are always happy to race, but this year we know the chances won’t favour us, as we can’t count on Julian, who we hope will make a fast and complete recovery,” said sports director Davide Bramati. “We have a young team at the start, featuring also Fabio, who has had a great season so far and will make his first appearance here. Despite not being among the favourites, we are still motivated to do a good race.”.
The Frenchman is not the only rider to be out of Milan-Sanremo with bronchitis. Bahrain Victorious announced on Tuesday that Sonny Colbrelli would not race after also missing Paris-Nice due to the same illness.
