'I'm not used to people being kind to me': A stirring chat with Pippa York

You probably know Matt Stephens from his work on GCN or his race commentary. Or maybe you’re familiar with his terrific Cafe Ride videos on YouTube, which he’s been publishing for Sigma Sports since early 2019.

In these videos, Stephens meets up with a cyclist of note – previous videos feature Mark Cavendish, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, and Fabian Cancellara – and heads out for an on-the-bike chat about cycling and the rider’s career. Stephens is a great interviewer whose warmth and positivity help to get a lot out of those he interviews.

Stephens’ latest Cafe Ride video, released over the Christmas/New Year period, is a must-watch and features one of the UK’s greatest-ever cyclists turned writer and broadcaster, Pippa York. While racing as Robert Millar, York won three stages of the Tour de France, stages at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, and claimed a slew of other top results besides.

In this episode of the Cafe Ride, Stephens heads to Glasgow, Scotland to meet York. Together the pair ride one of York’s old training loops south west of town, and catch up in a local cafe.

They cover a lot of ground, but the conversation is at its most engaging when York is sharing stories about Greg LeMond, and when she’s opening up about the impact of her transition, not just from an athletic perspective, but emotionally as well.

This is an important, challenging, and ultimately heartwarming video that’s certainly worthy of your time.
