When Filippo Ganna rolled down the start ramp of Tirreno-Adriatico’s stage one time trial, he did so with the final piece in a rainbow jersey inspired time trial bike collection. When a rider becomes world champion, they can look forward to a year in the iconic rainbow bands jersey and, usually, a bike to match. Most opt for a white bike with splashes of the rainbow bands here, there, and everywhere.
Filippo Ganna, however, goes about things a bit differently.
Ever since he won his first of two consecutive time trial rainbow jerseys at Imola 2020, Filippo Ganna has raced on a series of custom-painted Pinarello Bolide TTs with big bold blocks of a single colour. Each bike was almost entirely painted in just one of the colours of the rainbow bands. Steadily, he racked them up: yellow, black, blue, red, green.
Now, some eighteen months on from that empathic victory in Imola, Ganna has completed the set with a sixth custom-painted bike: white, to match the white of the rainbow jersey.
Through the lenses of our photographers, here are Filippo Ganna’s bikes of the rainbow.
Ganna kicked off his rainbow collection at the rescheduled 2020 Giro d’Italia. First up was gold yellow. Save some wheelset changes, the bike and build have remained pretty similar throughout Ganna’s three season span as World Champion. The first outing in the rainbow jersey and yellow bike netted Ganna a Giro stage win and a pink jersey. Ganna would go on to win all three time trials in the 2020 Giro.“Italian cycling fans are some of the most passionate, an image that would make any Tifosis heart swell with pride, seeing World ITT Champion, Filippo Ganna riding past a giant Tricolori flag in the Giro d’Italia.” Chris Auld @cauldphotoNext up the black band got its matching black Pinarello Bolide TT. Filippo Ganna won the stage 2 time trial of the 2021 UAE Tour.It wasn’t all plain sailing, though: Ganna could only manage third at the 2021 Tirreno-Adriatico time trial.Uncharacteristic 9th and 10th place finishes were as good as it got for Ganna at the 2021 Tour De Romandie.
One win from four was simply not good enough. Time for a change. By the time the Giro rolled around just a week later Ganna had a something new and something blue, in the shape of a Pinarello Bolide TT. Top Ganna was on top form once again, taking the win in the time trials that bookended the 2021 Giro. His front wheel caused a stir when the UCI banned it mid-Giro.A reminder of where and when Ganna won his ITT world title. The red Bolide TT made a brief appearance for the Olympics … … and European time trial championships to claim the silver medal. But Filippo Ganna doesn’t race for silver.
“Next colour, please!”Taking no chances, it was back to the blue bike for the 2021 ITT World Championships in Belgium. Blue bike = gold medal, and a second consecutive year in the rainbow bands.A green Bolide made a fleeting appearance as a spare bike for the 2021 ITT World Championships and as a race bike for the Team Time Trial Mixed Relay World Championships. More importantly, this photo shows the green and blue bikes (plus the black Bolide just out of shot) in the same place at the same time. Quashing any speculation Pinarello and Ganna are repeatedly repainting the same bike. Ganna’s bike is now equipped with custom aero extensions, Princeton Carbonworks wheels, Continental GP 5000 S TR tubeless tyres, a Fizik Ares TT saddle, and the Dura-Ace Di2 R9150 11 speed groupset.
