The opening stage of the 2022 Tour de France had a bit of everything. Big crowds, treacherous conditions, the GC favourites duking it out, a surprise winner, crashes, and some very questionable equipment choices.
There’s been plenty of talk already about Specialized’s new time trial helmet and its attached “head sock”, and there’ll be plenty more to come. But the Specialized-sponsored teams weren’t the only ones with helmets that got people talking – Ineos, too, was rocking some interesting headgear.

The 2022 Tour starts with three days in Denmark …… with the opening TT held in beautiful Copenhagen.Loud.Great crowds lined the route.Caleb Ewan is focused on the next two stages, both of which suits the sprinters.Bauke Mollema set a strong early time.Mathieu van der Poel spent a time in the hot seat after a strong, technically proficient ride.The weather conditions fluctuated throughout the day, but it was generally pretty wet.Filippo Ganna was one of the pre-stage favourites but struggled through the corners and finished fourth. Note the strange edges on his (massive) helmet.Geraint Thomas made a rookie error in leaving his gilet on, but still finished within sight of his GC rivals.Local favourite Mads Pedersen rode to sixth on the day.There’s that Specialized helmet and sock combo.
