Former U23 world champ Battistella says he lost memory of Amstel Gold crash

Samuele Battistella of Astana Qazaqstan, who won the under-23 world road title in 2019 after the disqualification of Nils Eekhoff, said via social media on Monday that he had lost his memory of a crash at the Amstel Gold Race.

The Italian up-and-comer crashed heavily when passing through a roundabout at the Dutch Classic on Sunday, and he said later that he lost consciousness for “20 mins or more.”

In a video Battistella posted to social media, he could be seen lying on the ground in the immediate aftermath of the fall with medical staff approaching him to offer assistance.

According to his Astana team, which posted an update with photos of Battistella to social media after he had been treated for his injuries, Battistella suffered facial wounds and a broken tooth, and required several stitches.

Fortunately, despite the scary television images after his fall, the 23-year-old Italian seems to be on the mend.
