Ferrand-Prévot to undergo surgery as iliac artery endofibrosis returns

Pauline Ferrand-Prevot will undergo surgery on Friday to treat iliac artery endofibrosis, which has returned to her left leg one year after a prior operation.

Ferrand-Prevot was first diagnosed with the problem, which limits blood flow in the affected area, at the end of the 2018 season after a long stretch of feeling unable to put normal amounts of power into her leg. Following an operation and a long recovery period, the versatile Frenchwoman returned to racing in 2019 to excellent results, ultimately winning her second cross-country mountain bike world title.

Recently, however, she has struggled to deliver power during cyclocross races. She said on Instagram this week that a medical scan this week confirmed another instance of iliac artery endofibrosis.

Since I started Cyclo cross I have a strange sensation in my left leg. I did a scan yesterday and the doctors found a new endofibrosis. Same leg as last year, but not exactly the same area. I will have surgery on Friday

As Pinkbike points out, recurrence of iliac artery endofibrosis is not all that uncommon, with a Stanford University study noting that half of 18 patients surveyed “experienced some recurrence of symptoms.”

Ferrand-Prevot noted that the problem is “less severe” than her previous one, but still requires surgery.
