Egan Bernal will undergo surgery for multiple traumas following bus collision

While at a team training camp in his home country of Colombia Egan Bernal collided with a parked bus, according to the Cundinamarca Transit Police. The Tour de France winner is reportedly in stable condition but will undergo further assessment at the Clínica de la Sabana outside of Bogota.

UPDATE: Clínica de la Sabana released a statement mid-day Monday with additional detail on Bernal’s injuries.

Bernal has been evaluated by a team of interdisciplinary specialists and will require surgery in the coming hours due to multiple traumas, the statement reads. Those traumas include: “cervical and thoracic trauma, closed chest trauma, muscle trauma, skeletal and lower limb trauma.” Bernal is currently stable.

The evaluation from Clínica de la Sabana supports reporting from Marca that indicated Bernal suffered a fractured femur and kneecap.

Ineos has not yet released a formal statement on the extent of Bernal’s injuries, but did confirm the incident earlier Monday.

“Bernal, who is at a team training camp near his hometown, was accompanied to hospital by team medical staff and was conscious upon arrival,” Ineos Grenadiers said in a statement. “He is stable and undergoing further assessment. The team will provide an update on Egan’s condition in due course.”

Bernal was out riding with a few of his teammates on his time trial bike when the incident occurred. The same group of Ineos Grenadiers riders had another near-miss with a car while training just a few days earlier.

Bernal was unable to defend his yellow jersey at the 2020 Tour de France due to a back injury and has been recovering ever since. He targetted the Giro d’Italia in 2021, and won in spectacular fashion, but was still absent from the French Grand Tour.

With a lengthy contract extension that will see Bernal ride for the Ineos Grenadiers through 2026, the cycling world was hoping to see the young champion race for yellow again in 2022.

This story is ongoing.
