Coryn Rivera wins final Giro Donne stage with an angel on her shoulder

Coryn Rivera sprinted to victory on the final stage of the Giro Donne, narrowly edging out Lizzie Deignan to take her first win since 2019.

“[My dad] was watching me from above, and that was for my dad,” Rivera said at the finish. “It’s my fiancé’s birthday and I’m not home so that was for my two guys.”

Rivera lost her father to COVID-19 in March, so her successful sprint in Cormons held extra significance.

“I feel really strong and I have a lot of motivation, I had an angel on my shoulder today.”

Rivera came close to a win on stage 6 but was outsprinted by Emma Norsgaard. Still, the DSM rider successfully delivered her teammate Loren Wiebes to two stage victories over the course of the Giro Donne. Rivera has taken victories at the Women’s Tour in Great Britain, RideLondon, Trofeo Alfredo Binda, and was the first American (man or woman) to win the Tour of Flanders.

In just a few weeks Rivera will fly to Japan to compete at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, a dream that Rivera and her dad had for years.

“It’s a dream of mine and for the family and my dad to go to the Olympics,” Rivera told NBCLA in June.
