Chris Anker Sørensen has died after being hit by a driver
Danish TV Sport 2 has confirmed former professional rider Chris Anker Sørensen died in Belgium on Saturday.
Sørensen, 37, was in Belgium with TV Sport 2 as a pundit on the upcoming World Championships, and reportedly passed away after being hit by a car on a ride near Zeebrugge.
Sørensen, who spent most of his career with different iterations of the CSC and Saxo Bank teams, was one of the most respected riders in the peloton and took a stage victory at the 2009 Giro and 2008 Dauphine, along with the Danish road race title in 2015. He finished 14th at the 2012 Tour de France, while also winning the combativity prize.
TV 2 Sport’s sports director, Frederik Lauesen, said “It is with great sadness that I have received the news that our good colleague Chris Anker Sørensen is dead”.
Lauesen continued, “Chris Anker Sørensen was in Belgium for the World Cycling Championships. Today, Saturday, he was out cycling and was hit by a car and he later died of his injuries. Our thoughts and deep sympathy go to Chris Anker Sørensen’s family.”
