Bernie Sanders is once again asking you to love bikes as much as he does

Viewed from the far-away land of Australia, there was a lot to love about Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th president of the United States. There was Amanda Gorman’s scene-stealing poetry, there was Lady Gaga’s stirring rendition of the (totally bonkers) US national anthem and, of course, there was the fact it heralded something of a fresh start for a fraught nation.

But really, the best thing to come out of Biden’s inauguration was this photo of Senator Bernie Sanders.

There’s so much to like in this photo. His body language, his casual parka at a formal event, the superb mittens – every bit of it. Unsurprisingly, the photo took the web by storm and ‘Bernie in a Chair’ quickly became a viral meme. This long thread is just a selection of the wonderful creations that have been shared via social media. There’s even a site that’ll put Sanders into any Google Street View image you like.

Of course, it wasn’t long until the cycling world got hold of the meme …

Occasional CyclingTips contributor Tom Owen created a nice thread of his own, including this zinger.

Twitter user @rich_mitch went for a historical angle.

This one from a bike shop in Worcester, Massachusetts resonated for a lot of people.

This thread from Rúben Silva was enjoyable too, notably:

‘Stas’ had Bernie in northern France, waiting for Paris-Roubaix to arrive.

Even Lemond Bikes (owned by three-time Tour de France winner Greg Lemond) chimed in with this great contribution.

CyclingTips’ own Caley Fretz came up with this beauty.

In fact, Caley got quite into the swing of it. The next few bangers are all his.

But Caley wasn’t the only CyclingTips staffer getting in on the action. Here are a few I whipped up:
