Bernal posts a video of his "First steps"
Egan Bernal posted a video update on his Instagram account as he continued his recovery from a horror crash last month. The footage shows Bernal walking unaided through a large door with the caption “Sorpresa, Mis primeros pasos,” which translates as “Surprise, My first steps.”
Despite perforating both lungs and suffering 20 fractures in a collision with a bus that almost left him paralysed just two weeks ago, Bernal looks in good spirits and impressively mobile in the short video. Bernal first underwent surgery to stabilise fractures in his spine’s T5 and T6 vertebrae days after the crash before a subsequent spinal surgery closer to the neck. In the video posted today, the 2019 Tour de France Champion and 2021 Giro Italia winner is wearing a neck brace and what appears to be a thoracic support frame.
Bernal was dicharged from the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana in Bogotá, Colombia four days ago to continue his recovery as an out patient from home.
