Giro d'Italia -

Bologna, it’s been a blast! Nothing else to say to the city welcoming La Corsa Rosa for La Grande Partenza of the 2019 edition. With a 8km time trial, speed was the keyword for this amazing late afternoon, while the brutal climb to the Santuario di San Luca was like a football stadium. Sold out for the event of the year. Here some pictures from inside the race from our privileged point of view.   Photo: Edoardo Civiero / Federico Damiani

bologna, Giro d'Italia, social ride, Zwift -

The big start – La Grande Partenza – is always something huge. If you’re not ready, you can easily find yourself overwhelmed to enjoy it at its best. That’s why for the 2019 edition of the Giro d’Italia, we thought about organizing a little ride to get in the mood. Thanks to the late afternoon Pro start, we had plenty of time to enjoy Bologna, the San Luca climb and the hills outside the city before watching the race. We did it together with our friends at Zwift. They’ve been in town from Thursday to launch their brand new partnership with Giro d’Italia. You can now ride the entire Bologna TT on the platform – how cool is that? Meeting point at Musixmatch HQ, in the heart of Bologna. Max – the owner – and his cycling team took good care of us and Zwift and designed a perfect course to experience Bologna and its surroundings on our bikes. It’s time to check the route and take some selfies. No better way than a coffee to start an Italian ride celebrating an Italian race. Headed outside the city to San Luca, the 2Km brutal climb that will be the judge ...

The city of Bologna, in Emilia Romagna, has hosted the Giro on numerous occasions but the 1981 Giro stands out for many reasons. The 1981 Giro d’Italia was a purely Italian affair with no trips into the islands or neighboring countries. The riders faced four-time trials (including one for teams) and ten mountain stages, two of which featured summit finishes. The 3,896-kilometer course covered nearly the entire length of Italy from North to South, beginning in the Veneto region then reaching Reggio Calabria on the Southern tip after eleven days of racing and then making an air transfer North to Roma on the first of two rest days. The 24-day journey then wound northward towards the 35-kilometer time trial in Tuscany on stage 13. The mountains began in earnest when the race then left Milan on Stage 16 and headed east to the only true Dolomite stage. But what a stage it was, climbing the Tre Croce pass to Misurina and then finishing atop the mighty Tre Cime di Lavaredo just two days prior to the final time trial that would bring the race into Verona. Following Frenchman Bernard Hinault’s victory in 1980, this edition was expected to be an all ...
