Marino Vanhoenacker writes history

By winning Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie Marino Vanhoenacker put his name into the history books today. The Belgian, representing the Austrian pewag racing team, has thus become the first triathlete in the world to win an Ironman full distance race on every continent. The now 42-year-old athlete is the first and only to secure the Ironman continental Grand Slam. Vanhoenacker is quite used to records. He still holds the record for Ironman victories overall – as of today – 17. Carfrae and Vanhoenacker win IRONMAN Austria

This year’s IRONMAN Austria in Klagenfurt was a total triumph for Castelli athletes, who took both the women’s and men’s titles at Lake Wörthersee. Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) looked strong right from the start and took charge halfway through the bike leg. On the bike the triple IRONMAN world champion gained an advantage from the aerodynamically optimized T1:Stealth W Top and clocked an incredible 4:47:39 bike split. With a concluding marathon of 2:49:06 (new PB), she set a new women’s race record to finish in 8:41:17. While Carfrae was racing in Austria for the first time, Marino Vanhoenacker was on the starting line for the 8th time. In the days prior to the race the Belgian had left no doubt that he would be the man to beat. However, his rivals put in everything they had and showed that they would not go down without a fight. It was not until KM 150 on the bike that he was able to distance his competitors, but he entered T2 with a race-best 4:19:57 bike split and a lead of 4:11. Meeting of superstars at IRONMAN Austria

The popular and scenic race at Lake Wörthersee is given particular attention this year with the participation of triple Ironman world champion Mirinda Carfrae. Rinny will celebrate her Ironman debut on European soil and already announced to try to beat the course record. Her husband Timothy O’Donnell who will race Ironman Germany a week later will accompany the Australian superstar. Defending champion and one of the top contenders for the men’s title „Mr. Ironman Austria“ Marino Vanhoenacker aims to add victory #8 in Klagenfurt. The Belgian world-class athlete will lead a strong group of Pewag Racing Team athletes (professionals and age group). Vanhoenacker will be wearing a cutting-edge Free Sanremo Suit in a special design. PRODUCT DEVELOPING IN THE WIND TUNNEL

It’s a long and sometimes complex journey before crossing the line to the cheers of the crowd as a winner. Castelli leaves nothing to chance, and we are constantly thinking of how to improve our products so that athletes can enjoy as many such moments as possible. This includes selecting the right fabrics, optimizing the pattern design, extensive in-house tests and, last but not least, sophisticated sessions in the wind tunnel. This spring we again went to the Milan wind tunnel with Marino Vanhoenacker to test new apparel ideas and refine his bike setup.
