Hushovd and Danielson

Team Garmin-Cervélo today announced its much-anticipated 2011 Tour de France roster. The squad features world champion Thor Hushovd, Christian Vande Velde, a two-time top-ten finisher, and Tyler Farrar, who has claimed stages at two other Grand Tours and with lead-out man Julian Dean, will be looking to add a third to his list. Ryder Hesjedal, who placed an impressive 7th overall in 2010 returns, as does recently crowned U.S. National Time Trial Champion, David Zabriskie.

David Millar, tour veteran, will feature throughout as a TT expert and rider strong both on the flats and in the mountains. Two riders will be making their Tour de France debut this year: Tom Danielson is coming off strong performances at the Tours of California and Suisse; and Lithuanian National Champion, Ramunas Navardauskas – the team’s youngest rider – rounds out the squad.

Dan Martin (Garmin-Cervelo) won the Giro della Toscana yesterday in a six-man sprint to earn his first victory of the season. The 24-year-old Irishman bided his time in the finale and came around Italy’s Mauro Santambrogio (BMC)in the final 50 metres for the win. Santambrogio initiated the sprint from 300 metres out and hung on for second place while Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rubiano Chavez (D’Angelo & Antenucci-Nippo) claimed third. “Christophe and I were in a 10 man group, Christophe took the opportunity to attack, I did my best to block behind but with the strong headwind to the line we caught him with only 300m to the line. Having Christophe in front allowed me to recover enough to take the sprint” said Dan, “It was a beautiful race and made the trip to Tuscany worthwhile for all!”

danmartinBefore May 2011 Garmin-Cervélo rider Dan Martin had never been to California. His introduction to the state at this year’s Amgen Tour of California gave him a vivid view of the Golden State’s varied terrain and weather. From a 30-degree Tahoe blizzard to raking Central Valley winds to 75-degree Southern California sunshine, the 24-year old Irishman saw California in all its scenic moods.

After Martin had a chance to shower off all the champagne from the squad’s wild team podium celebration in Thousand Oaks, Garmin-Cervélo’s team photographer Mark Johnson caught up with him to collect his thoughts on his first-ever US race, where he placed a very respectable 14th overall.

If you were fast, you might have noticed some of the new aero details of the BodyPaint SpeedSuit that Millar was wearing yesterday.

Creating clothing for athletes at the highest level of the sport is the most demanding proving ground for Castelli.
