Pro Bike Check: Greg Callaghan’s Cube Stereo 140 Super HPC
What is they say about the luck of the Irish? Well there is nothing lucky about Greg’s meteoric rise to stardom this year, it’s all down to hard work. After showing his potential last year we all knew he was going to score a big contract, so it was no surprise to see him getting picked up by the Cube Action Team. What was surprising was how fast he put pressure on the top step of the podium, and then to top it all off, he only went and won the Irish EWS round (he was one error on the final stage away from doing the same in Scotland too)! Greg is now a threat to the top step at every round…
We caught up with Greg at the Scottish Open Enduro to check out his smaller 140 mm bike, a bike he had chosen to race the muddy and rooty stages of the Tweed Valley (albeit with a 160 mm fork).
Greg chose to run a team issue smaller travel 140 mm CUBE Stereo HPC for the Tweed Valley raceGreg normally runs as firm a suspension setup as possible, but since breaking his hand has softened it a little. He runs 80 psi in the 160 mm Fox 36s with two orange and one blue tokenand 190 psi in the back, 10 psi lower than his normal setup.Greg had trimmed his cockpit down to 760mm, and rolls the grips over when they wear to double the life – a pro with his feet on the groundGreg runs a 40mm stem to keep the reach compact and aggressive
Greg runs XTR brakes in the UK and Ireland, swapping to Saints for overseas. Finding the Saints a little grabby for slow speed trailsWhen it comes to tyre pressures, Greg runs 21psi in the front and 23psi in the rear. He only changes up a little when the stages are really rocky.Greg likes the classic Scwalbe Magic Mary front and Hans Dampf rear in supergravity. If he is running procore he will drop the pressures to 18 front and 21 rearThe FOX EVOL features a remote lockout, for fast spints….the suspension remote puts control at his fingertipsGreg is running the new 42 tooth XT cassette and a single ring up front
