How to service the Lower Leg on a RockShox Pike

Last week we covered how to do a quick post ride fork service [click here], now we will walk you through the process for a Lower-leg service of the RockShox Pike. During the process we will clean the inside of the fork fill it up with some new suspension fluid.

Despite regular maintenance after every tour, it is advisable to do a lager service of the fork after about 50 hours. Simply greasing the dust seals and replacing the oil will help extend the life of your fork. If this service is neglected, the performance of the fork deteriorates and it can cause damage to the fork stanchions and other components.

How to

Zu Beginn wird mit Hilfe eines Ventilschraubendrehers das Ventil entfernt.
To start you should unscrew the valve using a valve screwdriver, ensuring that there is no more pressure in the air chamber. This makes the disengagement of the retaining bolt at the lower part of the fork easier.
Im Anschluss kann der Einstellknopf für die Zugstufe mit einem 2,5 mm Inbus entfernt werden.
Following that the adjustment knob of the rebound dial can be removed with a 2.5 mm Allen key.
Die darunter befindliche Schraube sollte dann um 3-4 Umdrehungen gelöst werden.
The screw underneath should then be partially undone with a 5mm Allen 3-4 turns.
Und auch auf der anderen Seite muss die Schraube nun um wenige Umdrehungen gelöst werden.
The bolt on the other side, can now be undone a few rotations.
Nun kann mit leichten Hammerschlägen die Verpressung im Gabelinneren gelöst werden. Wenn die Schraubenköpfe aufliegen ist dies bereits geschehen. Hier ist in der Regel nicht viel Kraft erforderlich.
With light hammer, tap the bolt heads to release the internals of the fork. If the bolt heads rest against the fork body, this has already happened. This usually required just a little force.
Jetzt können beide Schrauben komplett herausgeschraubt werden.
Now both bolts can be completely unscrewed.
Nun kann das Casting nach unten abgezogen werden. ACHTUNG: Hierbei tritt ÖL aus, welches aufgefangen und fachgerecht entsorgt werden muss.
Now the lower assembly can be drawn downward. NOTE: Oil will now pour out, this has to be collected and disposed of properly.
Das Öl sollte mit einer Ölwanne oder einem Eimer aufgefangen werden.
The oil should be collected with an oil pan or a bucket.
Es gilt nun die Staubdichtungen des Castings zu reinigen. Hierfür empfiehlt es sich das Casting nach unten zu halten, damit Dreck nicht hinein, sonder heraus fällt.
It is now time to clean the dust seals. For this purpose, it is advisable to turn the lower assembly upside so dirt does not fall inside.
Die Staubdichtungen sollten mit RSP Slick Kick Gabelfett oder Buzzys Slick Honey gefettet werden.
The dust seals should be lubricated with RBS Slick Kick or Buzzys Slick Honey fork grease.
Das Casting wird auf die Standrohreinheit gefädelt.
The lower assembly can now be pushed back over the stanchions again.
Zur leichteren Montage der Standrohre empfiehlt es sich die Federringe der Staubabstreicher zu lösen.
For an easy installation, it is recommended to release the spring rings of the dust seals.
Sobald Casting und Standrohre wieder vereint sind können diese wieder platziert werden.
Now the fork is reunited.
Nun wird das Casting wieder mit neuem Schmieröl befüllt. Dieses lässt sich am genausten und präzisesten mit einer Spritze applizieren.
Now the lower assembly is refilled with new oil. This can be done most accurately and precisely by administering with a syringe.
Das Schmieröl wird über unten in das Casting gespritzt. Auf Dämpfungsseite sind es 5 ml auf der Luftseite 15 ml 0W30 Öl
The lubricating oil gets injected into the bottom of the lower assembly. Drive Side 5 ml and the non drive side 15 ml of 0W30 oil.
Nun können die Schrauben auch schon wieder platziert werden. Es empfiehlt sich auch diese vor der Montage mit etwas Fett zu versehen.
Now the bolts can be pushed through again. It is also recommended to put some grease on them before the get assembly.
Als Drehmoment gibt RockShox 7,3 Nm an.
The bolts should get tighten to 7.3 Nm.
Zum Schluss muss nur noch der Zugstufen-Einstellknopf wieder montiert werden und die Arbeiten sind abgeschlossen.
Finally, only the rebound knob must be mounted again and the work has been completed.
Die Federgabel ist nun wieder einsatzbereit! Also nichts wie raus in den Wald!
The RockShox Pike is ready again for the next 50 ours of trail riding. So go out in the woods and shred some trails!!
