How to adjust the Air-Volume of a Magura Shock

A few months ago we shared the secrets of how to change the air chamber size of both FOX and RockShox shocks. It is now time to delve into a MAGURA shock and get that internal volume dialled.

Before the release of a new bike, each manufacturer spends a lot of time working with suspension experts, finding the correct tune for the bikes suspension characteristics. Nevertheless, it can sometimes happen that the performance of the shock is not perfect for every rider.

For some the rear is too progressive, perhaps not using enough of the suspension travel; for others it may be too linear chopping through too quickly and not giving not enough feedback from the ground.

If you are having problems with your shocks performance, you can easily adjust the characteristics by adjusting the air chamber volume of the shock. If your shock is too linear, it is advisable to reduce the air chamber volume, if it is too progressive and does not use much suspension travel, the air chamber volume should be increased.

Zu Beginn sollte die Luft aus dem Dämpfer abgelassen werden ...
To start the process you have let out all the air from the shock and remove the Sag-Indicator
... hierzu hilft bei Magura die Ventilkappe mit ihrer integrierten Nase.
The valve cap has a small nose to make this as easy as possible.
Im Anschluss kann man die Luftkammer einfach per Hand aufdrehen. Sollte das nicht möglich sein kann ein Ölfilterschlüssel zur Hilfe genommen werden
Now the shock should be able be opened by hand. If it is too tight use a strap wrench as a bigger lever.
Vor dem Volumenspacer (auf dem Bild ist keiner verbaut) befindet sich ein Sicherungs-Shim dieser wird nun ebenfalls auf der Kolbenstange etwas nach vorne geschoben.
The Volume Spacer (none are mounted in this image) is secured with a small shim, this one just had to be pushed forward a little bit onto the piston to gain access to the spacer.
Der Volumenspacer sitzt im oberen Teil des Dämpfers, es kann aber auch vorkommen das ab Werk kein Spacer verbaut ist, zum Vergrößern des Luftvolumens muss dann eine andere Luftkammer gekauft werden
The Volume Spacer sits on the upper part of the shock, If you are seeking a more linear feel and there are no spacers left to remove, then an optional air chamber must be purchased to enlarge the volume of shock.
Der Spacer wird eingesetzt, nach oben geschoben und im Anschluss mit dem Shim gesichert
The new spacer get’s inserted and pushed upwards. Following this, the spacer is locked in place using the Security Shim.
Um das Zusammenschrauben des Dämpfers zu erleichtern empfiehlt es sich die Zugstufe komplett zu schließen, nun muss die Luftkammer gegen den entstehenden Druck wieder festgeschraubt werden. Im Anschluss kann der Dämpfer wieder montiert werden.
To make it easier to screw the air chamber back over the shock – the rebound should be closed completely. After the air chamber has been screwed on again the shock can now be re-inflated to the desired air pressure.
