ENDURO Long-term Test 2014: The Solid Magix X01 Raw
Two weeks ago our testrider and photographer Klaus received his longterm-testbike: The Solid Magix X01 RAW 650B. A short time ago we had the chance to test the frame in a size medium, (Click here)but at nearly 1,90m, Klaus had to wait a bit longer for his size large, which is definitely the right one. Klaus jumped straight on the bike and started to put the miles in, we now find out how the bike felt on the first 8000 Meters of climbing and descents.
The Solid Magix: A rock solid bike, that rolls on 650B wheels and provides a lot of fun with its valuable components. The RAW-Look fits perfectly to the bike!Riding on local trails is as much fun as shredding in the alps. Generally the Magix loves the speed!
“My focus with the Solid is to ride as much as possible and to have even more fun doing it! Right beside my flat in Stuttgart there are many singletrails, and in the holidays and some weekends I am keen to get up into the alps. Bikepark-Visits are also on the to-Do-list. I really like to ride tours without shuttle-support, I love that good feeling at the end of the day where I know that I earned all the meters of descent by my own power. After two Alps-Crossings over the last few years, each with over 15.000 meters of altitude in 8 days, I am looking forward to repeating it this year as a season-highlight.”
The finish of the frame is very nice. Raw aluminum and black decals create an awesome look.With 175mm travel in the rear you can really shred with this bike.Saddle height can be adjusted with the Rock-Shox Reverb Stealth seatpost, which fits perfectly to the overall package and convinces with first-class functionality.The RockShox Pike RC rewards with a solid performance and is the “Dual Position Air” model.
The Magix gets delivered from the German manufacturer Solid-Bikes for €2,999 and comes with high-quality parts. SRAM X01, RockShox Pike and Reverb-Stealth-Seatpost are only three examples of this machine, which offers 160mm travel at the front and 175mm at the rear. The overall-weight of 13,5kg is very good value considering the fat tires.
The X01-crank comes without a chain-guide but includes a massive bashguard in case of a inadvertent impact. We have not had any issues with chain retention yet.The X01-switchgear is another part of the exclusive features. A 1×11 setup is the perfect choice for this bike.The Magix comes with 650B-wheels from the own brand “Reverse Components”. They have given (so far) no reason for complaints.While the Magix, we already tested in Size M (Click here) came with Magic Mary, we now have “Hans Dampf” tires from Schwalbe, delivering the required amount of grip!Also a change to the first Magix we’ve tested: Instead of a Reverse-Components headset, we now have a model from FSA.The stem from Reverse Components is no aesthetical highlight, but the short length (60mm) fits perfectly and enables the rider to find a compact sitting position.On the new testbike there is a quick release for saddle adjustment. Makes sense, on some steep downhills you may need more travel than the vario-seatpost delivers!The saddle from Reverse Components is comfortable, but it is expected that it will get exchanged to a personally preferred one. Because a good saddle fit is crucial.This is a clean cockpit! On the right side there is unfortunately no matchmaker-clamp. The braking force is supplied by Avid Elixir 9 Trail brakes with 180mm brake discs on the front and rear.Most parts are from SRAM/RockShox or the house’s own component brand “Reverse Components”.A relic of the 2 or 3 chainring era, the derailleur-mount. Optically no highlight when riding a 1×11 setup. But you could also mount a chain guide, but we haven`t missed one so far.The only real flaw on the Solid Magix is probably the cable routing. They relinquish internally cable routing so we have to manage with a lot of zip ties. This can be made more elegant!The Magix leads always leaves us with a big smile. Long uphills and flat passages can be ridden with the neutral and variable geometry (with 175mm at the rear!) without any problem.Good thinking: The spare derailleur hanger down at the bottom bracket can save your day!Solid Bikes – German engineering par excellenceMagix – the name says it all.With the Solid Magix our longterm-test (and photographer) Klaus has a lot of fun!
The geometry of the bike has a really convenient sitting position for me, allowing me to ride long uphills without back ache. You sit centrally and compact, not stretched, making the pedal-ergonomics perfect for me. During explosive acceleration the bike feels a little bit sluggish, but it has a very high running smoothness and exudes a lot of control. The 175mm rear travel works perfectly together with the potent 160mm Pike. The strong Avid 9 Trail brakes are a trustworthy slowdown-partner.
