To receive a wild card for the Tour de France is a dream come true for the entire MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung team, while it is also a historic moment for African and world cycling. OFFICIAL!!! @TeamMTNQhubeka have received a Wild Card for the 2015 @letour! Amazing news… pic.twitter.com/rvTwBmuVpx — Team MTN-Qhubeka (@TeamMTNQhubeka) January 14, 2015 “We can light up stages of the Tour and we bring this incredible story to the Tour. We’re putting African kids on bikes and being at the Tour de France would help that immeasurably” said general manager, Brian Smith. “I’d like to think that the green jersey is an option to target but we’ll certainly be riding for stage wins. We could bring the first African team to the Tour de France and from that the minimum would be to win a stage.” The 2015 Grand Depart will take place on the 4th July, starting with a 14km time trial in Utrecht. The riders will tackle 21 stages, covering 3344km in total before ...

This season all but over, the Tour of Beijing is the last UCI World Tour event of the year, after that the Japan Cup and a few other low key events will see the saxon finally out. All in all it’s that time if year where the professionals are a hanging up their wheels for a bit if off season recovery. For the fans the winter can drag by with no race news or events to gorge on. But for a pro cyclist  who may finish the season in October then start again in mid Jan at the Tour Down Under or one of the other early season races it’s just a small window of time to see family and live outside the cycling bubble. For us fans of the sport it’s a case if finding our kicks elsewhere in the cycling world, whether that be getting involved in cyclocross racing or spending the same amount of time cleaning your rain/snow covered bike that you’d spent watching a race on TV is just two ways that as a avid cyclist may pass the winter months. The other perfect way of getting your off season kicks is to delve in to the ...

Last year Louis Meintjes (MTN-Qhubeka) took a surprise silver medal in the U23 road race at the World Championships. Having just finished his first Vuelta, the talented climber is back for more in 2014 and is confident in his chances on a course that suits him well. Going into last year’s World Championships, Louis Meintjes had not been tipped as one of the potential winners of the race. However, the young South African did an outstanding ride on the hilly course in Florence, escaping late in the race to take second behind Mate Mohoric. This year Meintjes is back in Ponferrada hoping to capitalize on another year of riding at the professional level. Being part of a strong group of young African climbers, the South African has been doing races like Giro del Trentino, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Tour de Suisse and most recently Vuelta a Espana while riding in the colours of MTN-Qhubeka. Meintjes kicked off his Worlds campaign with today’s time trial where he finished a solid 8th. Not known as a specialist, he was one of the early starters and set an early mark for his rivals to beat. In the end, he was beaten by many of the pre-race ...

Bringing to end a near-decade with one team and embarking on a new project with another, Tyler Farrar has confirmed that he will race with the Team MTN-Qhubeka squad in 2015. The American has taken six individual stages in Grand Tours; one in the 2011 Tour de France, two in the 2010 Giro d’Italia and three Vuelta stages between 2009 and 2010. However his rate of victories has slowed in the past two seasons and the 30 year old is looking for a fresh start to try to get things back on track. “I am really excited and happy to be joining Team MTN-Qhubeka next year,” he said. “This is a big change for me in my cycling career after having spent seven years with my current team. I feel it is the perfect timing for me to move on though and Team MTN-Qhubeka is definitely the team that appealed to me the most.” Farrar is part of a general fortifying of the team; new signings include Edvald Boasson Hagen and Theo Bos and, together with the current team captain Gerald Ciolek, the team will have a strong sprinting and Classics presence in 2015. It is pushing hard for a ...
