The Trance Advanced, from the Taiwanese bike powerhouse Giant, is the only 27.5″ bike in the whole group test. With 140mm travel, it offers 1cm more than the competition, which combined with the smaller wheels should be a fun package on the trails. Does the concept work out?

Spanish bike maker Mondraker is well known for extreme frame designs and their revolutionary Forward Geometry. The system, which is proven in downhill and extreme terrain, should also work for all-round bikes like the € 4,099 Factor XR. We were excited to see if the concept really works out.

At Niner Bikes, WFO stands for “Wide Full Open,“ meaning something like ‘let it roll, whatever comes.’ With 150mm of rear travel and an option of 150 or 170mm at the front as well as big 29” wheels the WFO 9 should destroy anything the pilot points it at. A bike for everything except nasty surprises.

The Giro Alpineduro are lace up, clipless shoes built for a rugged winter. They feature a Vibram sole, water resistance and and insulated upper. With rugged but clean (not for long) looks, we’re hoping they will be a good winter option, provided they have the durability to match.
