Crashes and defective equipment are anathema to those competing for podium places. If a rider crosses the finishing line with head bowed, the first thing people look at is the wheels and tires. If they have no air in them then the stage, and often the entire race, is ruined. Tires have to cope with a lot of abuse, and not only in races. Grip, and above all puncture resistance, can make the difference between victory and defeat.
