Team Garmin-Sharp’s Dan Martin gets his 2014 racing season underway today at the seven-day Tirreno-Adriatico in Italy (Mar 12-18) It is only the Garmin-Sharp rider’s second time doing the race and after last year’s rain-lashed affair where he finished 19th overall, just under eight minutes down on race winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team), Martin said he’s under no pressure whatsoever, with his big goal just two months away. Indeed, the team for Tirreno is built around American Andrew Talansky, but given the significant number of new faces in the team’s roster this year – and retirements of Christain Vande Velde and David Zabriskie – Martin’s keen to show the new guys the ropes and lead by example by chasing whatever results are possible. “The average age has dropped substantially in the team this year and there’s a lot of young riders. That’s going to change how we race and it’s definitely changed my position in the team. I feel old now,” Martin laughed (he’s just 26). “I’m now one of the older guys. It has brought it home to me that I’m going into my seventh season this year and the time has flown by. I have a bit of experience now and ...

February saw the inaugural edition of the Dubai Tour. A four stage UCI race, all kicking off each day from the World Trade Centre. From here you could catch the peloton sign on, the roll out and get your daily dose of traditional food and geek out on the latest bike bits, not a bad start to the day I’m sure you’d agree. Castelli were proud to be the official partners and supply the leaders jerseys, each stage saw the leaders of all four classifications kitted out in the latest Castelli jersey. With Versace design and Castelli’s technical input the jerseys looked good on all of the leaders shoulders. If you kept abreast of the sport during the race you’d know that the whole event was incredibly well received, not just by the pros competing but by the flurry of media attending, team staff and local fans. The race was strongly contested by many of the big names. There was no turning up and using it as training for later races, it was serious business for all the riders involved. Taylor Phinney took the overall lead, Marcel Kittel stormed to 3 stage wins and a sprinters jersey plus Garmin-Sharp’s Lasse ...

Lasse Norman Hansen is a new signing for Team Garmin-Sharp in 2014. He comes from a very promising under-23 career which also included a gold medal at the London Olympics in track omnium. We are really excited to see what Lasse can do in 2014, he’s off to a great start finishing 3rd overall at Dubai Tour! What is your first memory involving a bicycle? That would be riding a way-too-small bicycle around in the back yard. It was the bike that I got too big for, that’s the first bike I remember having fun on. What got you started into racing? I started riding my school bike on longer rides. My uncle was a director of a firm that makes bicycles. He gave me one and told me to start riding it seriously. He said for fun but then I got into it and it went from there. What is your favorite type of race? I really don’t know — I have a few favorites. Of course I like racing on the track. The shorter track races that are really intense. And on the road I like the really tough races with short, steep climbs and cobblestones. Lasse riding to ...

Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) won the inaugural edition of the Dubai Tour on Saturday after successfully defending the race lead from his opening time trial stage win. Phinney’s teammate Steven Cummings came into second place, 15 seconds behind, while the Danish Olympic Champion (Omnium) on Team Garmin Sharp, Lasse Norman Hansen, was third 17 seconds behind. RCS Sport, which also organizes the Giro d’Italia, did a fantastic job this year to help organize and develop the Dubai Tour. RCS Sport has signed a three-year agreement with the Dubai Sports Council and are considering taking the course into the expansive desert country beyond Dubai’s spectacular urban landscape. “When we received the proposal for the Dubai Tour, we said, ‘Why not?’ After all, Dubai hosts many world-class events, and cycling is a prestigious addition to the list,” Saeed Hareb, chairman of the organizing committee, said. “We are all happy with what we saw. It brought people out onto the streets. We hope to grow the event next year.” Everybody seemed to like what they saw in the first edition of the Dubai Tour, especially local sheiks underwriting the four-day race.
