When Johan Van Summeren and Fabian Cancellara staged their famous pursuit match in the final kilometers of Paris-Roubaix on a hot, dusty, dry April day in Hell, the Belgian had something special on his side against the Swiss powerhouse – a critical piece of kit that might have been the difference between sweet cobble kissing victory and a late catch by the dominant force on the pave this spring – the Castelli Sanremo Speedsuit.

It’s a heady claim, but Castelli’s ingeniously designed short/jersey combo slash skinsuit is claimed to save a rider significant time: 10-15 watts at 40 km/h. With a rapidly emptying rear tire, following a huge effort in the break, Van Summeren was certainly not hindered by his choice of clothing on the day.

Van Summeren
Paris-Roubaix is well known as a new product test lab. It’s a big stage, it’s a challenging stage, and it’s a legendary stage. Succeed here and cyclists will take notice. Despite the obvious challenge the cobbles present, the most recent focus has been on new aerodynamic products. The theory behind this is, make your move on the cobbles, and make it stick on the tarmac in between. This has been the recipe for victory in all recent runnings of the “Hell of the North.”

Johann Van Summeren, Winner of Paris-Roubaix 2011Belgian Johan Van Summeren, wearing possibly the fastest bit of clothing ever created for road racing – the Castelli SpeedSuit, soloed off the front to claim the victory of the 2011 Paris-Roubaix.

It was sun, blue skies and dust rather than mud that greeted the combatants on today’s Hell of the North, Paris-Roubaix. On a spectacular day of crashes, splits and dust it was Johan Van Summeren, Garmin-Cervelo, who attacked a leading group of four riders with about 15-km left before going on to win the Queen of the Classics.

The Garmin-Cervelo rider took the biggest win of his career, ahead of Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek) and Maarten Tjallingi (Rabobank).

“I am the happiest man in the world. It’s a race that’s made for me, it’s made for my body.” said Van Summeren when Belgian fans waved their flags in delight at the Roubaix velodrome.
