The GP5 knee pad is Level 2 certified and offers one of the highest levels of protection in the entire test field, reading 13 kN at 3.4 ms on the lab monitors. At just 136 g, it’s also one of the lightest pads, while its € 89 price tag places it in the mid field of this test.

South African protection specialist Leatt is well-known for designing and creating the neck brace back in 2003, a donut-shaped neck support also called the “Leatt brace”. Since then, the portfolio of the Cape Town based company has grown extensively, and now includes a massive range of MX- and MTB-specific clothing and protectors. The AirFlex Pro knee pad retails at € 89.99 and stands out from the crowd of knee pads for its distinctive design: unlike with the other models in this test, the insert isn’t integrated into the sleeve but sewn on top of it.

Swiss brand iXS specialise in the production of technical clothing and protection for motocross and mountain biking. Straight away, the FLOW EVO+ knee pad stands out from the test field with its olive-green colour. Tipping the scales at 143 g, it’s one of the lightest pads in the test. Compared to its competitors, it’s rather compact and features a relatively short sleeve with only a small portion of fabric extending over the thigh and calf.

German manufacturer ION has its roots in the water sports sector, where it’s known primarily for wetsuits. However, in 2012 they added an entire bike line to their product range, which includes clothing, accessories and protection. For 2022, the K Lite was redeveloped from the ground up and designed to offer medium impact protection for enduro oriented riding – which makes it a perfect match for this test! A medium strength material lines the side panels of the pads while a thin mesh patch covers the back of the knee.

The Launch D3O® is their medium-gauge, Level 1 certified knee pad, which is designed for daily trail adventures. The sleeve is made entirely of a sturdy material and features a Velcro fastener both at the thigh- and calf-end.
