At $100, the new Xpedo Zed pedals aren’t cheap, but they cost significantly less than boutique options while still offering similar features.

Review: Xpedo Zed Flat Pedal
$100 may seem like a lot of money for a chunk of aluminum, but it’s pretty reasonable considering most premium pedals retail for nearly double the price. So how do these “reasonably” priced Xpedo pedals compare to their pricier competition?
The edges of the platform are chamfered to help reduce pedal strikes.
From a features perspective, the Zed is stacked. It has an ultra-wide 110x110mm platform that is only 12mm thick, which puts it on the larger and thinner end of the spectrum.
Every set of Zed’s ships with extra pins in the box.
Each side of the 6061 CNC aluminum pedal is outfitted with 8 grub screws, for a total of 16 pins per pedal. Unfortunately, they’re top loading only, so the pins are difficult to remove if they bend or shear.
The hex key at the end of the pedal axle is easily accessible. This makes it easy to tighten if the pedals develop play or if you want to perform a full rebuild.
The platform rotates on a chromoly spindle via a combination of two sealed bearings and a bushing. Out of the box, the pedals spun freely but they quickly developed minor play after several rides.
We tried rebuilding the pedal, but after just a few more rides the play was back. According to Xpedo, our test set was from a preproduction batch and they’ve had no complaints from anyone on production pedals.
We wish the Zed’s offered better grip, but we can’t really complain at this price.
Out on the trail, the Xpedo pedals offers solid albeit average levels of traction. For those who aren’t looking for clip like levels of retention, the Zed’s offer a good balance between feeling strapped in for takeoff and being able to re-adjust your footing.
If you don’t want to blow boutique money on pedals, the Xpedo Zed offers nearly all the same features for considerably less. They’re not perfect, but we can’t complain at this price.
