Video: Paul Basagoitia goes big in Utah

Paul Basagoitia Goes Big

Clearly Basagoitia still has the skills to pay the proverbial bills.

Freeride star Paul Basagoitia has a message for his fans: He’s back. In fact, he says he never left. Things just have changed a little.

“I think a lot of people got mislead when I broke my wrist in 2012,” Basagoitia told Mtbr. “I was out the majority of 2013 season because I had three operations on my wrist. And when I came back from that injury I made up my mind that I wasn’t going to compete in slopestyle anymore. Instead my focus is on understanding the video side of things and creating unique video content.”

To prove that point, the 28-year-old from Reno, Nevada, recently took a trip to southern Utah to do a little filming with the crew from Definition Films. He calls the area one of his favorites and it’s easy to see why in the video below. But before you press play, here’s a little background on the video and what’s ahead for Paul Bass.

Mtbr: How long did it take to sh0ot the video?
Paul Basagoitia: The total days of shooting was five. We got pretty lucky with weather for the most part. Right after the last shot of the trip it started to rain and it didn’t let up until four days later.

Mtbr: Which was the hardest trick?
PB: Probably the last shot in the video. The lip was pretty flat and every time I went to flip it, I felt like I wasn’t going to get the flip around. My goal was to flip can it and I’m glad it worked out.

Mtbr: Any major mishaps?
PB: I took one pretty good slam on my first superman seat grab attempt. I ended up getting blinded by the sun and didn’t grab the seat. I thought I broke my collarbone but luckily I just tweaked it.

Mtbr: Any other interesting happenings while shooting?
PB: Surprisingly, no. I usually I come back from a trip like this with some crazy stories. We got very lucky with everything flowing our way.

Paul Basagoitia Goes Big

This is Basagoitia’s first season aboard SCOTT Bikes. For this video he rode a Gambler.

Mtbr: Which bike are you riding?
PB: I’m on the new SCOTT Gambler. I was really impressed with how quickly I was able to adapt to the new bike.

Mtbr: Give us the laundry list of key components?
PB: Right now I’m running the new Raceface Atlas 35mm bars and stem, Raceface six cranks, Spank’s Spike Race28 Wheels, and I’m excited to announce that I’ll be rocking Fox suspension this year.

Mtbr: What are your plans this season?
PB: To keep creating sweet video content. For the last 10 years I was so focused on competing and trying to win every contest. I had amazing contest career and I’m hoping to have the same success on my video projects.

Now without further ado, here’s the video. Enjoy.
