Video: Meet Joe Breeze maker of the first purpose built MTB
You can make a solid argument that Joe Breeze created the first purpose built mountain bike. The Californian was at the epicenter of the sport’s birth in the late 1970s, when people first started riding old balloon-tire bikes in the woods. Breeze was so enamored with the new activity, he built his own “mountain bike.” And then another and another.
In this great video from the Pro’s Closet Museum Series, Breeze talks about those early days and the progression of his first bicycles — from the inspiration of his Schwinn Excelsior klunker to the nickel-plated Breezer Series 3, which is on display, along with other notable vintage bicycles, at The Pro’s Closet’s Vintage Bicycle Museum in Boulder, Colorado. As for Breezer No. 1, it lives at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.
