Cyclists often think of performance on the bike as being primarily a factor of the amount of power one’s legs can produce. This is a very simplistic understanding that leaves much room for improvement. Hence the constantly growing equipment and ergonomics sector of the bike industry. Marginal gains in equipment can add up to a significantly more comfortable and more productive ride experience, the thinking goes. In turn, this philosophy aims to alleviate some of the pressure for the classic principle that basic time in the saddle is essential to improving performance on the bike. For those of us who don’t get paid to ride our bikes, this is a very enticing concept.

TOGS (or thumb over grip system) has embraced this concept in the fullest sense, offering a simple addition to your bike kit in the form of a clip-on thumb grip. The product stemmed from the multiple grip options on the traditional curved road bar and the idea that hand position plays heavily into leverage and power transfer. After all, your hand is one of only three contact points on the bike. Feet, butt, hands. Pro tip: pay attention to the contacts. That’s where some of the greatest marginal gains can be made.

For 2016, TOGS has expanded its product line, adding a hinged carbon fiber model that retails for $35. The hinges make install easy and they feature the same universal fit for all grips. Claimed weight is 18 grams. This makes for a winning combination, yet in an industry full of such products, you may not have heard of TOGS just yet. But at that price, there’s not a lot to lose — even if your thumbs disagree.
