Speedplay expands SYZR MTB pedal system line

The Syzr pedal features micro-adjustable float via a pivot mechanism that’s in the cleat. This allows for a customizable range of 10-degree range of float.

Speedplay is growing its line of SYZR mountain bike pedals, adding a new chrome-moly version to go along with the existing stainless and titanium models. Other than a different spindle material, the SYZR chrome-moly shares all of the same bearings, components and features as the more expensive models, but has a more entry-level price point of $165.

Roller-cam release technology is designed to ensure consistent release in wet or muddy conditions.

Additionally, roller-cam release technology is designed to ensure consistent release in wet or muddy conditions. Instead of the usual metal-to-metal connection that allows other pedals and cleats to seize during release, Syzr cleats have ceramic roller-cams that do not seize when wet because they roll. In addition to improving consistency of release, the ceramic contacts provide improved long-term durability.

To make Syzr pedals easier to engage, the cleats have what Speedplay calls target acquisition technology, which uses funnel-shaped guides to steer the cleat into the pedal’s latch mechanism. Two wing-shaped funnel guides at the front of each cleat effectively increase the size of the target area to facilitate easier engagement.

Engagement security is also improved by reversing the typical orientation of the pedal’s pivoting latch. The Syzr’s latch design prevents inadvertent release when pulling hard on the pedals because you no longer pull up against the latch gate.

Finally, you can further customize fit by adapting the pedals to your foot-stance width. Spindles for stainless SYZR pedals are offered in four lengths: 50mm, 53mm, 59mm and 65mm. Custom length spindles can be ordered as single pedals, individual spindles, or in sets of two. In addition to the standard 55mm SYZR Pedal System, you can also special order stainless SYZR Pedal Systems in any combination of custom left and right pedals for a nominal custom-build up charge.

The Speedplay SYZR is also billed as delivering efficient power transfer, platform stability and adjustable float. Most Syzr components are manufactured in the USA, and all SYZR Pedal Systems are hand-built at Speedplay headquarters in San Diego, California.
