Sneak Peek: e*thirteen teases new TRSr and TRS+ tires

While mountain bike hub and rim standards are evolving at a rapidly and sometimes disorienting pace, there are several recent improvements that have legitimate benefit. That includes the movement towards wider rims.
The advantage of a rim with a 25-30mm inner diameter over something with a more traditional 19-22mm measure is the dramatic increase in sidewall support. This increase in sidewall stability allows riders to significantly lower tire pressure, which leads to better traction.
There are a number of manufacturers producing wider rims, but tire technology is lagging behind. At least that’s the take of e*thirteen, which alleges that most brands are still creating tires designed around 23mm rims. And that’s why they have taken matters into their own hands.

The company’s new TRSr and TRS+ tires are designed around wider rims such as their new 27mm carbon race wheels. The sidewalls and center tread of these prototypes have been strategically reinforced to offer better flat protection, and the casing has been designed to reduce burping. The center knobs have a slightly reduced height for faster rolling, while the side knobs are siped for improved traction.
To ease tubeless installation, both the e*thirteen rims and tires are built to ETRTO standards. When used together, the brand claims it’s almost always possible to get tires to seat using a floor pump.

The TRSr tire will be available in a sticky 3 compound DH rubber, with extra reinforcement through the center knobs to help prevent pinch flats, while the TRS+ will be a dual compound. Options will include 650b x 2.35 TRS Race, 650b x 2.35 TRS+, 29” x 2.35 TRS Race and 29” x 2.35 TRS+. e*thirteen is still wrapping up development and finalizing molds, says marketing man Todd Bishoff, but they’re hoping to launch the new tires in April 2016.
