Review: Sharkies Organic Energy Sports Chews and New Turbo
We strolled by the Sharkies booth at Interbike on our way to the outdoor Paddock area and we found that they had a new Turbo Energy Chew in Strawberry flavor. What makes it turbo? The half shot of caffeine from white tea provides the kick.
If you aren’t familiar with Sharkies, the company has been around since 2003 and was started by a triathlete looking for an organic food that would “quickly deliver energy and fuel the body to meet the physical demands of endurance sports.” Sharkies are made with USDA Certified Organic ingredients and are free of wheat, gluten, dairy and gelatin. They are also vegetarian and Kosher. You are also buying American when you pick up some Sharkies because they are made in the USA.
Their current offering include sports chews in the following flavors: Berry Blast, Citrus Squeeze, Fruit Splash and Watermelon Scream. They also make a kids version that is also organic and comes in Mixed Berry and Tropical Fruit flavors. And if your kids just want an organic snack, Sharkies offers fruit chews for kids in Fruit Splash and Berry Bites flavors.
Sharkies are sold individually for about $1.70 per 45g pack or you can buy them in boxes of 12 packs for about $16.99.
Our Take
Mtbr received a couple of boxes of the new Turbo Strawberry and the Berry Blast. We really like the taste of the sugar coated Turbo, it is easy to chew and digest. The Berry Blast is also good but is noticeably chewier and is quite sticky, you really have to chew them well. Sharkies are similar to Clif Shot Bloks and Sport Beans in the chewables category. We didn’t notice a caffeine “hit” from the Turbo’s like we notice with certain caffeinated gel products, but at the same time we don’t notice a hit from other chewables with caffeine either. Sharkies are definitely worth checking out.
