Review: PureFit Nutrition Bars

PureFit nutrition bars

We recently received a shipment of PureFit Nutrition bars and we have been enjoying them both on and off the bike. They are not a “cycling-specific” type bar, but they provide a good option if you are looking for something a bit different from your usual energy bars. They are targeted towards performance athletes, fitness enthusiasts, casual atheletes/weekend warriors, busy professionals, moms and dads on-the-go as well as to people with Celiacs, diabetics and those with food intolerances.

They are promoted as the “original 18 gram protein, gluten-free, non-dairy, vegan nutrition bar”. Usually when I hear any of those terms, I expect the results to be “taste-free” as well. Such is not the case with the PureFit bars. The PureFit bars come in a seven flavors including Almond Crunch, Berry Almond Crunch, Chocolate Brownie, Granola Crunch, Peanut Butter Crunch and new flavors Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Toffee Crunch.

PureFit bars - flavors

PureFit bars are Kosher-certified and vegan-approved and they do not contain dairy, wheat, or gluten, and will not melt in their packaging. PureFit works “diligently to provide high-quality, award-winning nutrition bars without artificial ingredients, sugar alcohols or common allergens, including milk, wheat or gluten.” Made from all natural ingredients, each bar contains 18 grams of soy protein and they use brown rice syrup and beet syrup.

So how did they taste? The ones with peanut butter (Peanut Butter Crunch, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Toffee Crunch) were heavy on the peanut butter, which isn’t a bad thing but you will want to be sure to have some water around to help you wash it down. If peanut butter isn’t your thing, the Almond Crunch, Berry Almond Crunch and Granola Crunch are good options. Our own personal favorite was the Chocolate Brownie followed closely by new flavor Peanut Butter Toffee Crunch.

The bars are moist and chewy with a light crunch. They were all a bit sticky, which makes unwrapping while riding a bit of a task so play it safe and remove the wrappers while you are stopped for a break. One thing we noted is that the packaging has quite a bit of air in it and that the wrapper is much longer than the actual bar (this can be seen in one of the photos in our gallery). These are sold by weight, so you are getting 2 ounces of nutrition no matter what, but we thought it worth a mention.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 Flaming Chili Peppers

MSRP: $2.49 for a single 2-oz bar or a box of 15 = $37.35 (ordered direct online from the PureFit website, not including shipping)

PureFit Nutrition Bars can be purchased at a growing number bicycle shops across the country and are distributed exclusively through Torcano Industries. They are also sold at select Andronico’s, Draeger’s, Whole Foods and other specialty markets and can also be purchased via their website.”

From the Manufacturer

Since 2001, we’ve been producing high-quality, all natural, 40/30/30 nutrition bars that offer great taste without all the additives and sugar that are often included in other “nutrition bars.” PureFit bars do not contain dairy, wheat, gluten, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, or trans fats, so they offer a sound nutritional choice.

PureFit was created to offer a more nutritious energy bar option and to set a higher standard for nutrition bars. Everyone is eating energy bars as though they are a health food, so why not make them healthy? We wanted to offer a bar for everyone – one that would fuel an endurance athlete’s toughest workout, or provide a nutritious between-meal snack. We think we’ve done that with PureFit bars.

And what is so great about 40/30/30? In simple terms: As with everything else, balance is important. A balance of nutrients provides sustained energy, without the drastic changes in blood sugar. PureFit bars are specifically designed to give you sustained energy and help stabilize blood sugar.

Whether you’re looking for a bar to fuel a hike, ride, run or other activity, or whether you simply want a healthy snack, PureFit is a nutrition bar that you can feel good about.”
