Nikon enters action camera market with KeyMission 360

Many tech websites are stating that the new Nikon is roughly the same size as the pint-sized GoPro Session.

Heretofore, the action camera market has largely been dominated by upstarts such as GoPro, while the likes of Nikon and Canon have stood on the sidelines. The lone outlier was Sony, whose Action Cam Mini has performed well in our comparison tests.

But in a surprising turn of events, Nikon has announced a new line of action cameras called the KeyMission 360. Like the 360Fly, which Bell is integrating into their Super 2R helmets, the KeyMission is capable of recording 360-degree panorama footage in 4k ultra high def.

We presume the built-in Bluetooth and WiFi will enable you to adjust settings and view/transfer footage via your smartphone.

Details are sparse, but Nikon states the camera features an “image sensor and lens on opposite sides of the device, with images from each combining to create a single, immersive, ultra-high definition 360-degree video and still image.”

The KeyMission is claimed to be shockproof up to 6.6 ft or 2m.

We do know the KeyMission is waterproof to approximately 100 feet and is designed to withstand dust, shock, and low temperatures. It will also make use of electronic vibration reduction to help produce crisp video. Check out this video to see the camera in action.

The KeyMission 360, plus the rest of Nikon’s lineup of action cameras, and other dedicated accessories will be formally announced in spring 2016. Until then, this sample footage will have to do.
