Legendary North Shore to Host Stage 1 of BC Bike Race

Fitness — and skill — are both required for success at the BC Bike Race.

Stage 1 of the BC Bike Race cross country stage race will take place in North Vancouver, home of the infamous North Shore trails, race organizers announced this week.

The iconic ladder bridges of the North Shore are some of the most recognizable trail features in all of mountain biking, making it a perfect kick-off site for a race that is legitimately billed as the “Ultimate Singletrack Experience.”

“The North Shore has played a big part in the development of the global mountain biking history and connecting the circle route of this history from North Vancouver to Whistler just makes sense,” said BC Bike Race president Dean Payne, alluding to the race’s final stage, which is held at the world famous ski resort and bike park. “We want to offer our participants the ride of their lives.”

And despite what you might envision when you think of the North Shore (ie: extremely gnarly trails for experts only), the area has undergone some changes. Under the trail stewardship of Mark Woods and the North Shore Mountain Bike Association, the building style has transitioned to the new school style, with lots of pump and flow. This has helped open up the trails to a more diverse group of riders. The exact route of the North Shore stage will be announced in early spring.

It’s not all tight and techy at BCBR.

After that, the race will head across the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver Island for the next two stages. Stage 2 will take place in Cumberland, and stage 3 in Powell River. From there the course will remain essentially the same as with previous editions: the Sunshine Coast and Sechelt for stage 4 and 5, Squamish for stage 6, and Whistler the final stage.

BC Bike Race will also continue to include two enduro special segments per stage, and host kids races at the finish of most stages.
