Santa Cruz Syndicate rider Josh “Ratboy” Bryceland registered one of the most memorable downhill world championship runs in history last week, overshooting the course’s final jump to throw a way the rainbow stripes and suffer both the agony of defeat and a broken foot. The stylish UK rider still managed to roll across the line for the silver medal behind countryman Gee Atherton, but it was little consolation as defeat had already been snatched from the jaws of victory.

Santa Cruz shipped Bryceland’s still dirt-flecked bike from the run to Las Vegas for display in their booth at the Interbike trade show. Contrary to what announcers said at the time, Bryceland did not break his pedal nor crank–it was only his foot hitting the ground after blowing off the pedal that did the damage–and landing to flat after sailing a 30-plus-foot bridge made for quite the impact.
