Eurobike: 2015 American Classic Carbonator wheels
American Classic unveiled their new $1799 Carbonator wide carbon tubeless wheels in both 27.5- and 29-inch configurations at Eurobike yesterday. The wheels feature a hookless profile with a bead shelf that’s angled outward to push the tire bead towards the rim wall.
Like American Classics’ Wide Lightning aluminum model, the Carbonators feature a substantial 33mm external rim width but are slightly taller at 24mm. The rim’s 26mm inner width allows tires to seat wider for more air volume than typical 19-22mm rims. The wider stance allows riders to run lower air pressures for better traction and terrain absorption.
The Carbonator 27.5s weigh in at 1595 grams per pair (740 grams front/855 grams rear), while the 29ers tip the scales at 1676 grams (784 grams front/892 grams rear). Both pairs roll on AC’s own hubs laced to three-cross steel 14/15 gauge spokes.
American Classic’s Bill Shook designed a proprietary freehub body built with steel-faced splines to prevent cassettes from digging in (left). AC’s honey-colored rim strips fully seal the rim bed (top right), while the Carbonator’s cross section looks stout (lower right).
The wheels are available in all the popular axel configurations and freehub options, and ship with AC’s tubeless rim strips and valves installed, though they can be run with tubes as well.
