Epic Rides: TheCommute Day 3
Starting last Sunday, a group of three intrepid mountain bike explorers lit out from North Lake Tahoe heading west through hundreds of miles of known and unknown singletrack, double track and the occasional bike lane on their way to the ultimate destination of San Francisco on a ride dubbed simply “TheCommute.” Our very own Angry Singlespeeder (AKA Kurt Gensheimer) is one of those explorers and we will be posting mostly visual updates throughout the week as the group makes their way west with the towns of Nevada City, Auburn, Folsom, Davis, Cache Creek, Calistoga, Novato and finally San Francisco pencilled in on the route.
Below are photos and descriptions of Day 3’s segment from Foresthill to El Dorado Hills, Calif. You can look at their Day 3 Strava Tracks here.
The Commute Day 3
Today’s 52 mile ride from Foresthill to El Dorado Hills was eye opening in numerous ways. First was the transition of terrain. Second was the transition of weather. Only a day ago, we were riding in 30 degree temperatures through alpine forests of cedars and aspens. Today on Salmon Falls Trail along Folsom Lake, it was 75 degrees on trail similar to San Diego with its red dirt, live oak and sagebrush. Even though James and Justin have grown up in California, this ride has given them both a new appreciation for the remarkable range of terrain, geology and flora the Sierra Nevadas hold in their vast, steep canyons.
Today was supposed to be a relatively easy and mellow day, but we still managed 52 miles and 7200 feet of climbing. I guess for Sierra Nevada standards, it is mellow. Tomorrow we ride along the American River Trail, through Sacramento and across the Central Valley to Cache Creek. TheCommute has now reached the halfway point, and we look forward to reaching the coastal range and the grand finale, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. – Kurt Gensheimer
