When we at Mtbr describe bikes, we often try to box them up in neat categories such as “trail” or “enduro.” It’s an easy way to describe how a bike may ride, but those terms are black and white. Actually riding bikes is a far more nuanced affair.

In carefully trying to compartmentalize what a bike is best for, it’s easy to forget that numbers are just numbers. Take the Kona Hei Hei Trail. This 27.5 bike has XC underpinnings and leans towards the trail end of the spectrum. But it’s also incredibly capable. If ordinary riders like us can smash burly features on a “trail bike,” just wait till you see what it can do in the hands of World Cup DH racer Connor Fearon.
