Bringing the Mountain Bike Experience to Women, Moab Style
It’s not often you see a gang of women mountain bikers crawl out of two old-school Volkswagen shuttle buses begin suiting up to tackle the world-renowned Porcupine Rim Trail in Moab, Utah. The shuttle drivers were just as surprised and insisted they get a photo to document the rare occurrence. Times are a-changin’ and more women than ever are hittin’ the trails on mountain bikes and they’re bringing a lot of friends with them!
In early May, Moab, Utah played host to the first MTB Experience coached Women’s Camp & Ride. This event brought women from all over the U.S. to ride the famous desert trails under the guidance and skilled coaching of 4 IMBA/BICP certified instructors and one Bell Joy Ride Ambassador. Some of the attendees never dreamed of being able to ride the notorious black diamond trails of Moab while others spent half their waking hours dreaming of doing just that. Seventeen women with a wide range of riding skill came together to camp, ride and share their stories of what mountain biking meant to them. They came to test their skills and courage and to go beyond their comfort zone. They did that and came away with new friends an experience of a lifetime. There were mechanical failures and there were crashes. There were even exotic smelling soaps/ lotions, string lights, flowers and gourmet meals. Heck, there were even HOT SHOWERS! But best of all, there was camaraderie, smiles, laughter, and stoke!
