The Lab: Giro Chronicle MIPS Helmet Review
Our global test team has been pushing products to the very limit on the world’s toughest trails. In The Lab, durability is rewarded and weaknesses have nowhere to hide. This time, we tested the Giro Chronicle MIPS helmet.
First launched at EUROBIKE 2016, the Giro Chronicle MIPS shares many of the same cues as Giro’s better-known Montaro MIPS enduro-specific helmet, but is much more affordable. While it forgoes the edge protection and roll-cage reinforcements of the Montaro, the visor is longer and the lid gives deeper coverage at the rear. The Chronicle also uses different air vents and MIPS inserts, but retains the Montaro’s approach to airflow and adjustment, faring brilliantly on long-term test. In terms of fit, comfort, ventilation, and sweat absorption, it was all top class, meaning you barely notice that you have it on.
While the visor’s massive size is a matter of personal taste, the mounting has only 3 engagement points that are quite far apart. As with any helmet, it’s definitely one to try before you buy. If you can accept those differences and the less durable design compared to the Montaro, then expect great performance and brilliant value for money. It’s not only 30 g lighter but also a whopping € 60 cheaper.
