First off, before anyone starts writing useful comments, I’d like to point out that the Trans BC isn’t actually a transient race that goes across British Colombia. The reality is that only a small part of BC’s enormous 944,735 km2 area is covered. It also doesn’t allow riders to transition themselves from one day to the next like I’ve experienced in other Trans style races. Instead, a big yellow school bus does most of the miles which lets riders enjoy quality over quantity as they start and finish each day in some of the best riding destinations that Interior BC has to offer.

San José – Costa Rica, 4 am. Even at this early hour I’m wide awake in my bed in the Barcelo hotel. I arrived in Costa Rica last night after travelling for more than 20 hours, a journey that was frustratingly riddled by delays. In two days time I’ll be in the depths of the jungle to pin on a number for an enduro stage race. In moments like these, I think as I untangle myself from the bed sheets, it’s easy to question why one races.

Unspoiled landscapes, untouched trails, and undisturbed views over glaciers: our three-day trip to Italy’s Trentino took us to places that are reminiscent of Canada’s backcountry but minus the crowds. Heading South, our initial ‘Tris Dessert’ plan was to scope out three neighbouring mountain valleys but we soon realized with heavy hearts (and hunger to explore) that our appetites just wouldn’t be satiated in such a short trip.
