The Stumpjumper can look back to a very long history at Specialized. After all, their very first bike bore this name. Compared to what we have now, the 1981 edition wouldn’t have much in common other than the name. A solid 130mm of travel, 29″ wheels, and Specialized’s own Brain damping system at the rear end — all ingredients that should promise a great deal of off-road fun. How does it pan out?

The Trance Advanced, from the Taiwanese bike powerhouse Giant, is the only 27.5″ bike in the whole group test. With 140mm travel, it offers 1cm more than the competition, which combined with the smaller wheels should be a fun package on the trails. Does the concept work out?

Spanish bike maker Mondraker is well known for extreme frame designs and their revolutionary Forward Geometry. The system, which is proven in downhill and extreme terrain, should also work for all-round bikes like the € 4,099 Factor XR. We were excited to see if the concept really works out.

“You have to finish first to finish first,“ said Jared Graves once when he was asked about his tactics for an Enduro World Series race. Crashes and defective equipment are anathema to those competing for podium places. If a rider crosses the finishing line with head bowed, the first thing people look at is the wheels and tires. If they have no air in them then the stage, and often the entire race, is ruined. Tires have to cope with a lot of abuse, and not only in races. Grip, and above all puncture resistance, can make the difference between victory and defeat.
