Back Issue | Group Test: Specialized Epic FSR Elite Review

The Specialized Epic has achieved what no other full-suss XC bike has done so far: Olympic and World Championship victories, both with the exceptional Czech Athlete Jaroslav Kulhavy.
For our group test we received the Specialized Epic FSR Elite, which is available from dealers for € 4,499 in an almost completely black finish. Along with a set of more aggressive tyres, we had the bike fitted with the SWAT System. Both upgrades add to the bike weight, but also deliver a clear bonus of trail fun!

Specialized EPIC ELITE Carbon Enduro Magazine (1 von 10)

Specialized equipped the high-quality carbon frame with numerous in-house products, reliable and solid Magura MTS brakes, and a well thought-out mix of SRAM X9 / X0 drivetrain components. During set-up the re-developed Specialized suspension components are immediately noticeable. Both the fork and rear shock are fitted with the patented Brain System, which can differentiate between impacts from the trail and drivetrain- or rider-induced suspension movement. The Auto-sag valve fitted to the rear shock also makes rear suspension set-up more straightforward.

Whilst the Brain System fitted to the fork allows for very fine adjustment, the rear shock has just four different settings. One more click from “completely open” was the right set-up for us. Bob was already effectively suppressed, but the rear suspension was still able to respond to impacts, providing adequate travel. But even in this setting a quiet clacking noise can be heard as the valve opens. You can’t feel it and it certainly doesn’t subtract from the ride. Those wanting even more efficiency must close the Brain System further but accept a noticeable decrease in comfort.

Our set-up kept the rear end responsive without plunging through the travel during compressions. The fork does the same and creates plenty of traction and very precise handling.

This potent chassis combined with well thought-out 29er geometry gives the Specialized Epic balanced and confident handling.
Whatever the trail presents, with the Epic the rider will always be in control of the situation. Nasty surprises? Forget it! The bike masters high-speed escapades and tricky trail sections with ease.

Everything on board
The Specialized SWAT system makes a rucksack superfluous for short rides. The rider has the bare minimum of tools on board, just like the tool kit in your car. We think: perfectly simple, simply perfect!

Intelligent
The Brain system fitted to both rear suspension and fork of the Specialized Epic are able to differentiate between ground impacts and drivetrain influence by means of a mass inertia valve. It offers the best compromise of efficiency and comfort.

Strong traction
Specialized fitted a set of Ground Control tyres for our test which delivered great traction and low rolling resistance. We had no punctures during the test.

Unpleasant –
The test riders found the seatpost layback to be unpleasant. We always had the feeling of pedaling from behind the bike even though the saddle was pushed all the way forwards. An in-line seatpost would give more room to move around on the bike.
