Women Who Crush on Skis: Why ‘Nexus’ Is One of Our Favorite Ski Flicks of the Year
Michelle Parker. Caite Zeliff. Brooklyn Bell. This next film is full of big names, big lines, and big smiles, and it carries a big accomplishment. ‘Nexus’ is the first feature-length film entirely directed and produced by an all-female team.
The film opens with two friends, two decades-long skiers, two locals in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Right away, the nostalgic banter between Jane Gallie and Margo Krisjansons makes you want to grab a cup of hot chocolate, pull up a chair, and listen to their stories. Oh, and laugh.
Nexus is one of those films you can’t help but grin and laugh along with. But it’s also one of those films every few minutes that really makes you stop and think there are so many rad women out there on skis. So, why are more not represented in badass ski films?
The creators of Nexus wanted to change that, so they made it featuring an all-female cast — and had women direct, produce, shoot photography for, and film it.
The ski film highlights five distinct groups of female skiers, their connection to the mountains, and how skiing shapes their relationships. Each segment explores how the mountains have been a transformative place for each of these athletes, and what they’ve learned from their time on skis.
Ski locations in the film include Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Alaska; Colorado; Washington; Revelstoke, British Columbia — and more.
We recently watched the full film and loved it. It’s funny, inspiring, and positively relatable. And 100% worth watching if you can make it to a show (Nexus is currently on tour).
Don’t believe us? Nexus won the award for best Storytelling earlier this year at the if3 Film Festival.
You can catch Nexus on the upcoming dates across the U.S. and Canada: November 22, November 30, December 1, December 2, December 6, December 16, and December 21. Find tickets and screening locations online.
