‘The Trouble With Bike Apparel’ Short Film Eyes Apparel Industry’s Shortcomings

Ever wonder what it takes to make that high-quality mesh jersey, or spandex bibs? Velocio has — and is wondering how to make its apparel better.

Velocio bike brand wants to do better. For itself, for the industry, for the environment, but most importantly, for its riders.

So, Velocio dropped a big statement on sustainability in the form of a film: “The Trouble With Bike Apparel.” The short film looks at the challenges facing the bike apparel industry and features Velocio staff, athletes, and industry experts.

“We can make as many changes as we can but there are forces that we need the customer to push on. There needs to be a demand for more accountability … this film urges people to demand that,” described Brad Sheehan, Velocio CEO. “The focus is on creating a durable product that will outlast competitors,” Sheehan continued.

As of 2021, 100% of Velocio’s jersey collection is made from recycled fabrics. And, the brand gives 1% of its annual revenue to climate-focused causes — like the recent special-edition UNITY Jersey whose proceeds went to organizations like The Environmental Justice Foundation, 350.org, and Protect Our Winters.

Yes, there’s trouble with bike apparel in terms of sustainability. But really, the outdoor (and greater) industry has trouble with all apparel. How can we use less, waste less, choose recycled, upcycle, and make clothing as sustainable but also as durable as possible?

Velocio has some thoughts … and some answers. Watch the full film.
