Scan Your Face for Custom 3D-Printed Ski Goggles: Smith Launches ‘Imprint’ Tech
Smith claims the first-to-market tech increases comfort, removes pressure points, and reduces light leakage.
Stop fidgeting and adjusting your goggles on the lift — Smith believes its latest innovation will help make goggles comfortable enough to wear all day.
Launching today, Imprint 3D Technology promises custom ski goggle frames you help design from the palm of your hand. Here’s the idea: Scan your face using Smith’s smartphone app, and then Smith automatically generates an individualized frame. This frame is then used to hand-assemble a complete ski goggle that’s delivered within 2 weeks!
The tech debuts on Smith’s I/O MAG Imprint 3D goggle with ChromaPop lenses.
Smith Imprint 3D Goggles
Buying a set of these custom goggles is a two-step process. First, head over to the Smith Imprint 3D page. This is where you’ll fork over $450 — you heard right — and receive a “purchase code.”
You’ll use that purchase code in the Smith app to finalize your scan and start the process of 3D-printing frames tailored to your face. If you’ve never digitized the contours of your own face for product development, don’t worry.
The app walks you through the process — look straight, look left, look right — and even has a practice mode. So you can try it out without a purchase code. (Try not to get too creeped out by your own digitized twin.)
Once you’ve done the scan, Smith generates a one-of-a-kind face flange mapped to the terrain of your face, and then the frame is printed using HP’s industrial Multi Jet Fusion platform. Finally, the goggle is hand-assembled in the USA and delivered — within 14 days.
Smith claims the custom Imprint 3D tech provides the “widest possible field of vision,” eliminates excess foam, and helps reduce the need for excessive strap tension.
And the ski goggles themselves come with high-quality features, like Smith’s magnetic lens-swapping system and ChromaPop “color- and contrast-boosting” lenses.
Interested in learning more? Start by picking out your strap color — black or white — and preferred lens: black, red mirror, violet mirror, or green mirror. Then get a purchase code, download the app, and get scanning!
