Matt MacDuff Styles the Steeps in ‘Free to Be’

Rib after rib of ridgelines and draws, perfect dirt, and unspoiled turns — that was the setting in freeride MTB’s early days, and now it’s the backdrop for ‘Free to Be.’

It seems like every outdoor sport started when a ragtag bunch of misfits acted on some harebrained idea. And freeride mountain biking is no exception.

Norco Bicycles calls its ‘90s origin story “a revolution fueled by emerging MTB technology, BC’s unique geography, and janky, hand-shot VHS edits shot by the pioneers who were unknowingly documenting the lore of the sport.”

Video and bike technology have both come a long way since then. The rest of it hasn’t needed to.

Matt MacDuff takes us to the birthplace of freeride in “Free to Be.”
