Daydream to Reality: Tail of the Dragon at Speed, in a Race Car, on a Closed Course

Combine an epic closed driving road (Tail of the Dragon), a world-class driver (Scott Speed), a top spec rally race car (VSC Subaru), and a beautiful fall early morning in the Southeast — and you get video gold.

If you’re into canyon carving, you’ve very likely dreamed of having the road all to yourself. Sadly, a majority of us aren’t top racing drivers with backing from Red Bull, because if we were, those dreams could come true.

One of the most famous driving roads in the world is the Tail of the Dragon, which straddles the Tennessee and North Carolina state line. This section of U.S. 129 is considered one of the most dangerous sections of road in the country — all 11 miles and 318 curves of it.

It is a glorious stretch of curvy pavement in the mountains that regularly entices drivers and riders from around the globe.

Red Bull managed to shut the road down and unleash its athlete Scott Speed, in a fully prepared Subaru rally car, to tackle it on one sunny fall morning. The video of the antics is a sensory treat full of raw engine and tire-spinning sounds and impressive imagery from all the right angles.

This should be some good fodder for your backroad driving daydreams for some time.
